5 Common Mistakes Martial Arts Beginners Make

Almost everyone who starts a martial art makes the same handful of mistakes. Knowing about them in advance can save a lot of trial and error — here are five common mistakes beginners make.

1. Trying to Solve Everything With Strength

Many beginners, when a technique isn’t working, try using more arm strength. But in most martial arts — Aikido especially — it’s posture, timing, and whole-body movement that make a technique work, not brute force. The more force you apply, the more unnatural the movement often becomes.

2. Getting Bored With the Fundamentals

Eager to learn flashy techniques quickly, some students try to rush through breakfalls or basic stance practice. But without a solid foundation, even learning advanced techniques will eventually force you back to the basics anyway. Repetition that looks tedious is what builds 80 percent of your skill.

3. Comparing Yourself to Others and Getting Impatient

People who start at the same time still progress at different speeds. Comparing yourself to who you were last month, rather than to the person next to you, is a far healthier attitude. Martial arts are not a sprint.

4. Ignoring What Your Body Is Telling You

Pushing through pain, or forcing yourself through a movement you’re not ready for, easily leads to injury. This is especially important with joint-control techniques — being honest with your partner and your instructor about how you’re feeling really matters.

5. Treating Dojo Etiquette as Mere Formality

Some students treat bowing or kneeling in respect as just formal procedure to get through quickly. But this etiquette is a real, practical commitment to looking out for your partner and staying safe. Taking it seriously is ultimately what builds good training habits.

It’s Okay to Make Mistakes

Nearly every student goes through the mistakes listed here at some point. What matters isn’t doing everything perfectly from the start — it’s noticing the mistakes and gradually correcting them.
